1) First, each student will be placed into a group of three. Each student in the group must chose one of the roles to be. The roles are listed below.
FDA Investigator: The FDA is concerned about the safety and overall effectiveness of this new medical treatment. As much as the FDA promotes new and exciting medical treatments, a very extensive review of the treatment must be done before it can be approved for use by the public. The FDA will take a particularly close look at the side effects and dangers of being infected with hookworms and whether or not those side effects are too serious and detrimental to the patients health for the treatment to be approved.
Hookworm Salesman: The hookworm salesman is concerned about one thing, selling hookworms to people who would like them. In order to do this however, he needs to know everything there is to know about the organism he is selling. Since patients usually have quite a few questions about hookworms before they put them in their body, answering a lot of questions is pretty common. Some of the things that the salesman will need to know are: the life-cycle of the hookworm, the history of the hookworm inside of humans, and how to use the hookworms correctly. You need to sound pretty convincing or people are not going to want to put worms inside their body.
Medical Consultant: The medical consultant has been hired by the salesman to help out in the case against him brought on by the FDA. The medical consultant is interested in this treatment method because it means that the patients who suffer from allergies and other illnesses don't have to take a pill every 12 or 24 hours to get rid of their symptoms. Instead, they can be inoculated with hookworms and be symptom free for the whole season. First though, the consultant must prepare evidence in support of this treatment. The consultant must be able to discuss the positive effects of hookworms on the body, and how they can curb allergies as well as other illnesses.
2) Once each student has chosen the role that they want to be, you will do research on the topic using the resources provided for you on the next page. Each group member will have to fill out his or her notes sheet provided underneath the role description and include that in the final product. The notes sheet is there to help you form an opinion for the final settlement paper.
3) After you have done your research and filled out your notes sheet, you will come back together as a group and discuss your findings. You will also discuss what should be done with this new treatment and whether or not you will recommend it for use on the general public.
